What is this treatment?

Botulinum toxin is a treatment that is most commonly known as Botox. It is quite often used to achieve a more rejuvenated look. Wrinkles appear over time and for some people this is a real concern. Botox is the trademark name for botulinum toxin. It is a neurotoxic protein that is injected under the skin in order to remove wrinkles that appear on the face.

Botox is used to temporarily relax facial muscles, which can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Why would you do it?

Botox injections are done to temporarily paralyse or relax facial muscles. Botox may be done for aesthetic or therapeutic purposes. It is used to get rid of wrinkles that appear on the face, including the so called ‘crow’s feet’ or laughter lines.

What does it involve?

Denervation with botulinum toxin involves applying Botox to face and neck wrinkles. In other areas such as the nose and the lips, extreme care must be taken as a misapplication can change facial features. However, when professionally applied it is very safe. It can also be used on other parts of the body, like arms and legs, which are affected by certain conditions such as spastic paralysis.

How to prepare for it

For the toxin to be able to effectively enter the skin, there are certain guidelines that should be followed in the days leading up to the treatment.

  • Blood clotting medication is not allowed to be taken. If you’re under some kind to treatment, you should speak to your doctor.

  • It’s recommended that you completely avoid alcohol before Botox.

Post-treatment care

After a Botox treatment, you should follow the aftercare instructions given to you by the doctor who treated you. Some of the recommendations are things that you shouldn’t do, they include:

  • Don’t go to the sauna or go swimming

  • Don’t consume large amounts of alcohol

  • Don’t lie down in the hours directly following treatment

  • Don’t exercise, especially exercises that require you to bend down like yoga

  • After getting Botox don’t bend down or lower your head to wash your hair for a few hours after treatment
